The role had been vacant for more than a year.
Last week, the U.S. Senate confirmed Donald Remy as the new deputy secretary of the Department of Veteran’s Affairs by a 91-8 vote. Remy served as the NCAA’s chief operating officer before being nominated for this position and has many years of experience both as an army officer and within the Justice Department.
During his confirmation hearing on May 19, he pledged to deliver “on our promises to those who served and their families.”
There was some controversy regarding Remy’s former role as chief legal officer for the NCAA. The Supreme Court recently ruled against the restrictions the NCAA had placed on student-athletes receiving compensation.
“I’m very concerned about Donald Remy and the way he conducted himself at the NCAA,” Senator Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee had said. “And I do not want that to happen to our nation’s veterans. They deserve better.”
Secretary McDonough encouraged the Senate to conclude the confirmation process so that he would have a deputy secretary to assist with the electronic medical records modernization project.
